Socotra’s Dragon’s Blood Trees: The Story Behind the Red Resin

Discover Socotra’s iconic Dragon Blood Trees, their umbrella-shaped crowns and red resin, and how to visit them responsibly during your expedition

August 25, 2026

The tree that defines Socotra

Few sights are as closely associated with Socotra as the dragon’s blood tree — known scientifically as Dracaena cinnabari

Its branching silhouette and umbrella-shaped crown make it instantly recognisable, whether you see a single tree against the sky or several spread across a rocky landscape

Why is it called a dragon’s blood tree?

The name comes from the red resin produced by the tree

This resin has historically been used in colouring materials and traditional practices — the name refers to the resin, rather than the tree literally bleeding

Seeing these trees in their natural surroundings offers something a photograph cannot fully convey — their scale, the patterns of their branches and their relationship with the surrounding landscape

Seeing the trees during your expedition

Our 8-day / 7-night expedition includes time to discover Socotra’s landscapes with a local guide

At the dragon’s blood tree stops included in the itinerary, your guide helps you explore the surroundings and understand what you are seeing

Wear comfortable walking shoes, carry drinking water and bring sun protection — follow your guide’s advice about the terrain and conditions

Photograph without disturbing

You do not need to touch or damage a tree to appreciate it

Avoid cutting the bark, collecting resin or climbing branches — leave plants undisturbed and follow your guide’s instructions when choosing where to walk

Look for photographs that show the tree within its surroundings, including the rocky ground, neighbouring trees and distant landscape

The trees are one part of a wider experience that brings together walking, coastal scenery and nights at camp
