The Days

Fifteen Chapters,No Repeats

The seven-night route visits many of these same places, grouping neighbouring stops into one day. Here the pace is slower: Homhil, Diksam and Firmihin each get a full day, and the few places that share a day sit right next to each other.

Arher's white dune above the sea at dusk

01

Arrival & ArherFirst Camp · East Coast

With fourteen nights ahead, the first day carries none of the usual rush. The vehicle turns onto the coast road, the modern world falls away, and by evening Arher's dune rises ahead in the low light.

The moment the airport gives way to open coastline

Looking out to the sea from inside Hoq Cave

02

Hoq Cave & Ras EriselAncient Cave & Headland · East Coast

A morning climb into Hoq's limestone chamber, marked by inscriptions sailors left two thousand years ago. Back at sea level, the drive continues to Ras Erisel, where the water itself changes colour at the meeting of two oceans.

A cave hung with formations older than most written history

Coral reef of the Dihamri Marine Reserve from above

03

Dihamri Marine ReserveMarine Reserve · East Coast

With no second location to reach today, Dihamri gets the time a reef like this deserves — a full day in water so clear the coral reads like stained glass, no itinerary pulling you back toward the road.

One of the richest reefs in the Arabian Sea

The natural pool at Homhil with dragon's blood trees above

04

Homhil PlateauDragon's Blood Forest · East

Homhil earns its own day here rather than sharing one. Dragon's blood trees stand over a natural infinity pool that looks out toward the coast below, and there is time to simply sit with the view rather than move past it.

A natural pool on the plateau edge, looking down to the sea

Highland valleys on the way to Dhaida'a

05

Transfer to Dhaida'aHighland Transition · Interior

A shorter, quieter day by design — the drive climbs steadily from coast to highland, and camp is set at Dhaida'a in air that turns noticeably cooler once the sun drops.

The first noticeably cooler night of the trip

Emerald freshwater pools in Wadi Kalisan

06

Wadi KalisanFreshwater Canyon · North-East

Kalisan alone today — a freshwater canyon cut into pale limestone, its pools cold and startlingly clear, with time to walk it end to end rather than pass through on the way to somewhere else.

Swimming in canyon pools fed by mountain springs

Travellers on a Zahek dune before sunset

07

Zahek Dunes & Omaq BeachDune Field & Southern Coast

The terrain changes entirely by afternoon: the vehicle crosses into Zahek's dunes, sand sculpted by wind into slopes that shift year to year, before the day ends at Omaq's quiet southern coast.

A dune field that shifts shape with the wind

Dragon's blood trees spread across the plateau

08

DijoubRock Formations · Central Highlands

Dijoub marks the road's turn from coastal terrain toward the island's high interior — a day of movement and changing rock, cooler air arriving with every kilometre gained in altitude.

The transition point between coast and true highland

The Diksam Plateau and its canyon edge

09

Diksam PlateauThe Highlands · Central Socotra

Diksam gets a full day of its own — granite formations breaking the plateau into shapes that shift with the hour, and by afternoon the light turns the stone the colour of rust.

A plateau high enough that the wind never fully stops

Umbrella dragon's blood trees in Firmihin Forest

10

Firmihin ForestDragon's Blood Forest · Interior

The signature landscape of the whole expedition gets its own full day: flat canopies spread out like a forest built to different rules, with nowhere else to be before or after.

The largest stand of dragon's blood trees on the island

Qalansiya village on its turquoise bay

11

QalansiyaFishing Village · North-West Coast

The route turns west today, toward Qalansiya — boats pulled up on the sand, nets drying, a village whose rhythm has little to do with the calendar of an expedition passing through.

A working fishing community, not a staged one

Sandbars and turquoise channels of Detwah Lagoon

12

Detwah LagoonLagoon · North-West Coast

Detwah's shallow brilliance gets a full day here — pale sandbars and turquoise water shifting with the tide, herons and rays moving through water calm enough to double the sky.

One of the most beautiful lagoons in the Indian Ocean

Shuab's white dunes and turquoise water

13

Shuab Beach by BoatHidden Beach · Far West

A morning at sea to reach Shuab — a crescent of white sand backed by cliffs, entirely your own for the hours the boat allows before the return crossing.

Bottlenose dolphins often riding the boat's bow

Beach camp by the sea for the last night

14

Dalisha — Last NightFinal Camp · Before Departure

The last night of camp, deliberately unhurried after two weeks on the move. Dalisha is close enough to Hadibo for an easy final morning, far enough to still feel like the island rather than the airport.

Fourteen nights of camp end quietly, not abruptly

15

Departure from SocotraSocotra International · Hadibo

A last breakfast on the island, then the transfer to Socotra International Airport — fourteen nights compressed into whatever fits in a carry-on, and a place that stays written into memory long after.
